What is Iron Ochre
Iron ochre is an orange-to-rust gelatinous deposit produced by anaerobic bacteria — primarily Gallionella ferruginea and Leptothrix ochracea — which feed on the iron naturally dissolved in groundwater. These bacteria oxidize ferrous iron into ferric iron, producing a sludge composed of 90% water that accumulates on the geotextile surrounding the French drain and clogs its perforations. More resistant than simple sediment clogging, iron ochre requires specialized high-pressure hydrojetting combined with a camera inspection to assess the extent of the deposits.
